Will the former OPON members be released from life imprisonment?
An appeal of three former members of the special detachment of police (OPON) - Elchin Amiraslanov, Safa Poladov and Arif Kazimov serving a life sentence will take place in the Garadagh District Court on 8 September under the chairmanship of Rashad Mammadov. According to lawyer Elchin Sadigov, the defense asked the court to replace the life sentence of imprisonment for 20 years. Prisoners have been serving their sentences from 16 December, and the 20-year term expires on December 16 this year.
The three convicts were arrested in connection with the rebellion by OPON in March 1995, and were sentenced to death. In connection with the abolition of executions in 1998, they are automatically assigned a life sentence.
These persons and other life-sentenced prisoners seek alternative punishment to imprisonment for 15 years. However, their access to the courts are left without satisfaction.
Amiraslanov, Kazimov and Poladov were recognized by the Council of Europe experts as political prisoners.—06D--
