Disasters caused by the earthquake in Turkey
Baku/21.02.23/Turan: Two earthquakes were recorded on the evening of February 20 in Hatay province in southern Turkey. According to information, 6 people were killed, about 300 people were injured. The first shock of magnitude 6.4 was recorded at 20:04 local time, and the second magnitude of 5.8 at 20:07. The epicenters of the earthquake were in the areas of Daphne and Samandag. The source of the first earthquake had a depth of 16.7 km, the second - 7 km.
The quake was also felt in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Palestine, and Israel.
According to the Emergency Situations Agency AFAD, a three-story empty building collapsed in the city of Iskenderun. Two more buildings were destroyed in Antakya, the capital of the Hatay province.
Azerbaijani Sabir Jabirzade, who is in Samandag as a volunteer, and independent journalist Seymur Kazymov, who has just returned from those areas, tell about these disasters in the “Difficult Question” program.
According to Jabirzade, their group has been in Samandag for about a week. “All this time there were small aftershocks of magnitude less than 4 points. However, last night there was an earthquake of magnitude 6.4. As a result, several buildings finally collapsed, which did not fall apart from the seismic shocks that occurred on February 6,” the volunteer said.
He noted that Samandage, on the initiative of Palmali Holding, they set up a tent city. “There is a canteen here, where the victims of the earthquake (5500-6000) receive food three times a day. Both government agencies and businessmen deliver food and clothing to the disaster zone, try to help the victims, cheer them up. But people are horrified. They think that now it will always shake,” said Jabirzade.
According to Seymur Kazymov, the province Kahramanmarash and its capital of the same name, as well as il Hatay and its capital Antakya suffered the most from the natural disaster. “These cities are practically wiped off the face of the earth,” the journalist said.
He noted that the first two days after the earthquake, very few people and equipment were involved in the rescue work. People are unhappy with this. They believe that if the reaction had been timely, then perhaps there would have been fewer dead.
According to Kazymov, Hatay suffered the most. “According to the latest data, the death toll here has exceeded 17,000,” he said.--0--

In recent developments that highlight the fraught nature of American politics, the Trump administration’s scrutinizing gaze has fallen upon the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), a key player in the global outreach efforts of the U.S. government. This move has stirred a discourse that spans beyond U.S. borders, roping in responses from Azerbaijani pro-government media and eliciting comments from local political figures like Natig Jafarli, chairman of the REAL Party in Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijani pro-government media have unleashed an unexpected wave of anti-Russian rhetoric, including claims of espionage at the "Russian House" and accusations that the opposition National Council has ties with Moscow. Chairman of the National Council of Democratic Forces Jamil Hasanli dismissed the allegations as baseless, describing them as part of a smear campaign by the government to shift attention from its own close ties with the Kremlin.
