Azerbaijani commercial banks stopped selling currency
On August 30 afternoon the Azerbaijani commercial banks have suspended the sale of foreign currency. According to various estimates, up to 15 banks currently do not sell the currency. The bank «Respublika» did not explain the Turan news agency the reason for the termination of sales, noting only that "this decision was taken within the bank."
In "AtaBank" and "of AFB" Bank said that they do not sell dollars for a few days. The bank «Nikoil» said that on 30 August stopped the sale of all types of foreign exchange. Previously 29 commercial banks purchased at an auction of $50 million presented by the Oil Fund. According to unofficial information, the request for sale has been several times higher.
The economist Samir Aliyev believes that the refusal of sales is associated with foreign currency shortages. "I do not think it is related to a possible devaluation," he said. Banks sell primarily cash currency for its clients on import operations. Only the remaining dollars are sold to other people. Currently, banks do not have the extra money, says Aliyev.–78В-

This figure, which includes reserves held by the State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan (SOFAZ) and the Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA), far exceeds the nation's external debt, which stands at a fraction of its reserves, specifically nearly 14 times less.
