Turkish economic commentator: "Turkey should know in which banks of the world its citizens keep money"
***
- Some scientific figures, journalists, NGOs supported the economic program promulgated by the respected Berat Albaiur (YEP), while some said that this program looks unpersuasive to overcome the crisis. How do you assess it?
- If you consider the program from a financial point of view, then it looks real. We admit that our economy "will narrow, decrease" for some period. That is, we have already reached the end of a certain period, a step backwards will be taken "from life in the "luxury" category. If we look from this perspective, then we see a program "reflecting reality." The program emphasizes that in the first place will be "production and export". In the transition period, unemployment is quite possible, as noted in the program, if it is supported by production and exports, it must be met positively. During the transition period, workers in the non-productive area may for some time remain unemployed. However, after a while they will be able to find work in more reliable areas. Until now, the government has tried to eliminate unemployment by increasing domestic consumption. But now the goal is to eliminate unemployment in the field of production. From what sources is the government going to do it? Turkey is a country that develops its economy through foreign investment. Currently, the most optimal way for us is to find money in Europe. Now, developing democracy and the legal system in Turkey, we should try to attract money from Europe. There is no other way after the experienced shocks. At this stage, serious reforms are needed in the public sector.
- Do you think the government will dare to "reduce" the state?
- This question has been on the agenda for many years. However, no effective measures have been taken. And this situation is boring me. Everyone sees themselves outside the contraction, as if it should not touch them. The Turkish people will be grateful to those who can implement these reforms. Reforms in the state apparatus are important, but I do not believe that it will bring big money. The psychological side of the matter is important.
- There were calls for the termination of mega structural projects. In your opinion, will the authorities stop these projects?
- It was said that the Istanbul channel "will be realized at the expense of foreign investments". As for other mega projects, they will be temporarily suspended, at least, they say. I do not believe that such mega projects can be realized in Turkey in the next 20-25 years. The Istanbul Channel project deals with the participation of Germans. If this turned out to be real and we, as before, would strengthen cooperation with the EU. In Europe, a lot of money and the economy of Turkey will be able to recover in the shortest time. There was a time when Western investments played a big role in the development of Turkey. No one is an enemy of Turkey, so our government should get along with everyone in order to attract investment to the country.
- However, Turkey's large investments leave the country. Local investments go away, but foreign ones do not come. What in the end?
- Currently, a part of large entrepreneurs withdraws their investments from the country. According to the information of the Banking Systematization and Audit Council, currently in Swiss banks there are 60 billion dollars belonging to Turkish entrepreneurs. There are structures claiming that this amount is even greater. It turns out that our businessmen, earning money in their country, take them to Switzerland. It is wrong to place the money earned in the country in foreign banks.
"Does the government know who they are?"
- The debt of the private sector is too great. In view of the fact that employers did not take the necessary measures, the debt grew at times. Companies require technical bankruptcy, and the employer does not care, since he transferred money abroad. In view of the company's large debts, we are experiencing these shocks. Turkey needs to carry out serious measures in this area. For example, the United States knows where their citizens keep their money. At the meeting of finance ministers of G-7 countries, a decision was made in this regard. Who transfers money to where and by what way they are earned? Turkey should pay attention to this issue. I positively perceive the economic program, but where do we find the money for the development expected in 3 years? We must see this openly.
