Erdogan Preparing to Take Up Full Power
The Parliamentary Committee in Turkey approved amendments to the Constitution extending the powers of the country's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and suggesting the country's transition to a presidential republic, Anadolu Agency reported.
New amendments transmit the executive power to the President and Vice President, abolish the post of Prime Minister, reduce the age for a candidate for parliament from 25 to 18 years and increase the number of MPs from 550 to 600.
The bill submitted by 316 members of the ruling Justice and Development Party will be submitted to the Parliament in nine days.
Reuters notes that the adoption of amendments to the Constitution needs support by 330 MPs. Then, this issue will be addressed in a referendum. -02D-
