Instability in Armenia Continues
Yerevan / 25.06.15 / Turan- ArmInfo: The Armenian government offers to subsidize the socially vulnerable citizens of the country due to the increase in electricity tariffs. This was said on June 25 at a government meeting by the Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan.
According to him, the government has ruled out the possibility of subsidizing all citizens. Subsidies will affect 105,000 poor families or 400,000 people. Subsidies per family per annum amount to 24,000 drams or 2.5 billion drams annually in Armenia.
According to him, no government in the world, including the government of Armenia, wants to increase electricity tariffs, but the government is obliged to take into account the realities. "In society, it seems that the increase in tariffs is associated with the problem of abuse in the JSC Electric Networks of Armenia or, as they say, robbery.
"We had to take a responsible approach to this issue, to ensure energy security of the country, which is an important part of the security of the country as a whole," said Abrahamyan.
However, the words of Abrahamian had no impact on the protesters, who already for the third day have been holding rallies in Yerevan and four other cities in the country, demanding to cancel the increase in tariffs by 40%.
On Thursday evening, protests in the streets of Yerevan will continue, according to local media. -02D-
