Turkan residents find themselves grappling with a mounting waste predicament as the scarcity of garbage cans and infrequent cleanings pose significant challenges. Numerous streets in Turkan have been equipped with only a handful of bins, leaving residents with the arduous task of covering long distances to properly dispose of their rubbish. The dearth of receptacles has compelled some to resort to littering in frustration.
During a recent bus ride aboard the 101 route through Turkan, our team observed an alarming proliferation of sizable dumps lining the roads. Despite repeated appeals to the authorities, the situation has yet to see substantial improvement. Of particular concern is the hazardous proximity of these dumps to residential areas, raising valid concerns among residents about their well-being.
The problem has also garnered media attention, with several reports highlighting the dire waste management issue. Residents recount having raised the matter multiple times, only to be met with unfulfilled promises.
In a video segment from 2020, BakuTV featured a statement from the Executive Office of the Khazar district's Turkan settlement, addressing the problem head-on. The officials assured the public of forthcoming measures, promising the installation of new containers in areas with insufficient garbage cans, specifically designated for household waste. Regrettably, the actualization of this commitment remains partial, as the current state of affairs reveals only a limited number of bins in certain locations.
Residents have further pointed out that within the villages, larger dumps have emerged, exacerbating the issue. The key to resolving this escalating problem lies in the urgent increase in the number of garbage cans and ensuring their regular upkeep and cleaning.
As Turkan continues to grapple with this waste management crisis, the onus falls on the concerned authorities to deliver on their pledges and implement effective solutions. Until then, the burden of keeping Turkan clean and habitable rests heavily on the shoulders of its exasperated residents."
