About Sixty Protesters Detained (video)
At least 60 people were arrested during today's protest against the non-combat death of soldiers. Among them were a journalist Khadija Ismayilova, youth activists Turgut Gambar, Abulfaz Gurbanli, Beyim Hasanli, Kenan Gasimli, Ruslan Assad, Rauf Mammadov, Ayaz Khalilzadeh, Aghababa Mamedov, Osman Akhmedov, Orhan Babayev, etc. According to the party Musavat, they were beaten and gassed already on the bus.
Police also detained a number of parents of soldiers, who were dragged along the pavement.
The action lasted for a total of about an hour. Police cordoned off and did not let anyone to Fountain Square. Cordons were put up by Book Passage. However, people showed civic activity and made their way to the area, not frightened by the police batons and threats.
At about 16:30 President Ilham Aliyev came from his summer cottage in the seaside settlement Zagulba to the city. Apparently, he will hear a report on the results of the action from the law enforcement agencies.
As participants of today's action say, many of them feel a moral victory from the fact that people are not afraid to go out on the streets and in the coming weeks and months protests against the injustices of the regime will intensify and human solidarity will strengthen. -06D-
