Azerbaijan votes for exclusion Syria from OIC
Membership of Syria in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation has been suspended. This decision, as expected, was adopted at an emergency summit of the organization, which ended yesterday in Mecca. The meeting participants laid the blame on the official Damascus for the bloodshed in Syria, but did not support military intervention in the situation.
Representatives of the Syrian government and the opposition have not been invited to the summit. Iran supported the expulsion of Syria from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. Azerbaijan voted for an exclusion.
The Iranian president made a clumsy attempt to interfere with the decision, and called for the establishment of an international Islamic court, but his idea was not supported.
The decision on exclusion of Syria is symbolic and will not have a major impact on the result of the conflict. Nevertheless, it emphasizes the further isolation of Syria in the Muslim world. The country had already been expelled from the League of Arab States. -02D-
