Charles Hendry : BP remains a key partner of Azerbaijan for 30-40 - years

Baku/22.11.13/Turan : Azerbaijan considers its partner for the next 30-40 years to be BP, and it was noted at a meeting with President Ilham Aliyev, said Charles Hendry,  Prime Ministerial Trade Envoy to Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan in his interview with Turan agency.

Responding to the question on the role and place of the British oil company in Azerbaijan, Hendry noted that BP is the largest foreign investor in the country and is a key member of the leading energy and infrastructure projects in the country.

“BP is very committed to this market and enjoys the full support of the British government. We fully understand the role and importance of Caspian oil and gas to European security. So we clearly support the decision of choosing the pipeline TAP” said Hendry .

He also added that after the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico , the company has tightened the environmental safety requirements to maximise the prevention of any recurrence of this type of incident anywhere in the world.

Answering the question what is the attitude of the British to the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline and, if the issue was discussed  with President Aliyev, the special envoy said that the topic was touched.

"Last week I was in Turkmenistan, where the topic was also considered. While talking about real progress on this issue is not necessary, I believe that in the long term, this project will be implemented , and Turkmen gas to Europe will come through the territory of Azerbaijan . The European Union and the United Kingdom are interested in this . However, we know that there are problems associated with both relations between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, and obstacles  on the part of Russia and Iran.

We hope that Baku and Ashgabat will come to an agreement, as with all the riparian countries," said Hendry.

To the question, what can  be said about the position of Turkmenistan, Hendry said Ashgabat

Is now implementing projects in China and TAPI ( Turkmenistan-Afghanistan- Pakistan-India.) The latest draft is actively supported by the USA seeking to provide economic support to Afghanistan.

"I think that today these issues are important for Turkmenistan, although they are mindful of the Trans-Caspian," said Hendry. -02В-
