Mohammed Javad Zarifa and Mevlut Cavusoglu
Foreign Ministers of Iran and Turkey compared their positions on the South Caucasus
Baku/29.01.21/Turan: The talks between the Foreign Ministers of Iran and Turkey, Mohammed Javad Zarifa and Mevlut Cavusoglu, held in Istanbul, ended on January 29 with encouraging press statements at a joint press conference.
According to the Anadolu agency, Zarif informed about the imminent trilateral meeting of the foreign ministers of Iran, Turkey and Azerbaijan in Tehran. He said that his tour to five countries of the region was a response to the idea of creating a new cooperation platform put forward by the leaders of Turkey and Azerbaijan. He highly assessed the interaction with Ankara, noting that Iran and Turkey in difficult periods constantly kept in touch with each other and these relations will continue. According to him, today new opportunities for cooperation have opened up for Tehran and Ankara in the Caucasus.
Zarif also said that at a meeting with his Turkish counterpart, he discussed Kabul's proposal to form a trilateral mechanism of dialogue between Afghanistan, Turkey and Iran. “Cooperation between Iran and Turkey is promising. If the United States takes a more reasonable position, the relations between Ankara and Tehran will strengthen even more,” the head of Iranian diplomacy said.
Stability and peace in the South Caucasus meet the interests of all countries in the region, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said in turn. “The normalization of relations meets, first of all, the interests of the countries of the region themselves. This is especially true for Armenia, which will benefit from the new situation. We expect Yerevan to take constructive steps in this direction,” the minister said.
The head of Turkish diplomacy noted the importance of long-term preservation of the ceasefire regime in the South Caucasus. “Words alone about readiness for peace are not enough, a real contribution is needed. We plan to develop the format of cooperation according to the "3 + 3" formula proposed by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and supported by the presidents of Turkey and Russia, as well as the leadership of other countries in the region, ”the minister said.
An important contribution to the development of dialogue between the countries is multilateral formats, such as Turkey-Iran-Azerbaijan or Turkey-Iran-Azerbaijan-Georgia, Cavusoglu said.
Turkey became the final country in Zarif's five-day tour to five states of the region - Azerbaijan, Russia, Armenia, Georgia. The purpose of the tour is to create a platform for cooperation between the countries of the region. — 0—
