Georgia Signs Association Agreement with European Union
Georgia signed an agreement on association and free trade with the EU. A solemn event took place in the framework of the Eastern Partnership Summit, which began on Thursday in Vilnius, reported channel "Rustavi 2."
The 1000 page contract was signed by Davit Zalkaliani, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia. He called the event historic, and said that the process of European integration for the country has become irreversible.
The signing of the Association Agreement was being prepared under President Mikhail Saakashvili, who repeated Georgia's desire to join the EU and NATO. A similar agreement was signed by Moldova, but at the last moment, Ukraine decided against signing the agreement.
Signing of an association agreement does not mean that there is immediately a binding contract. The contract must approve by parliaments of all EU countries, which may take a long time. However, the association does not guarantee entry the European Union. For example, Croatia waited for 12 years from signing the association agreement to joining the European Union. Turkey agreed to the association back in 1962, but has not joined any structure. --0--
