Human rights activists demand the release of two former OPON members

 Relatives of Poladova Safa and Arif Kazimov who serve their life sentence in Gobustan prison  demand their release. 

At today’s press conference, the  Director of the Institute for Reporters Freedom and Safety (IRFS) Rasul Jafarov,  said that a new appeal to President Ilham Aliyev with request to pardon these  two convicted who have been in jail for more than 17 years.

According to him, Poladov and Kazimov been included in the very first list of  the CE  on political prisoners in Azerbaijan. The State Department, international organizations, those being sentenced and their parents also repeatedly appealed to the President to call for mercy on them.

At the same time, according to Jafarov,  there is an appeal of the  convicted to the European Court for Human Rights.

Alishir Ahad , a member of the Committee  to protect the rights of Kazimov and  Poladov, they were convicted in connection with the rebellion of  OPON in March 1995. Poladov  and Kazimov and still do not consider them  guilty.

On March 13, 1995  the OPON subdivision  in   Gazakh region  attacked on the local police. After that it was decided to disband the riot police.

OPON members gathered in Baku at  their base in the village of "Eight Kilometer", and refused to obey the orders of the dissolution, and demanded his resignation.

On the night of March 17, the army units  loyal to authorities  was sent against the members of the OPON. Despite raising the white flag, those who were  in the base  were shot.

Among those killed was the  OPON commander, Rovshan Javadov, his brother Mahir Javadov managed to escape, and now he is in exile in Austria.

Dozens of people were  arrested and sentenced to long prison terms  on  the March events. later, most of them were pardoned. Currently, there are 19  prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment on the events of March 1995, the  attempts of coup d'etat of 1994,  and other similar cases the mid-1990s. They are  recognized by human rights defenders as political prisoners. -16C06-
