Ilham Aliyev: Pressure Growing on Us
Baku / 26.12.18 / Turan: The significance and role of Azerbaijan not only in the energy market, but also, in general, in geopolitical terms is growing, President Ilham Aliyev said in an interview with the Russia-24 TV channel.
"The country is becoming more developed, has more plans to assert itself in the region, and in proportion to our development, in proportion to how we conduct an independent policy, pressure is growing on us," he continued.
However, this pressure, according to Aliyev, is not related to energy factors. "... It is sometimes connected with attempts to draw us into some adventures that are absolutely against our people and our country ... There are no potential risks and threats in Azerbaijan - neither physical, nor ideological, nor social, nor political. Anything that can disturb the peace of our citizens can be brought in from the outside."
As Aliyev stressed, Azerbaijan very carefully treats issues related to its sovereignty and security. "Therefore, attempts to draw Azerbaijan into some international adventures have always failed. Probably, someone does not like it, and periodically we see these results. As a rule, they are expressed in the adoption of some resolutions of international organizations, where we do not participate at all," said Aliyev.
He also rejected criticism of human rights violations. "And it"s strange that resolutions against us are adopted by the structures where we are not members and we don"t intend to become members of. This causes more and more smiles, as they say. Also, of course, propaganda fake stuffing in the press is actively used. This is a favorite method of vilification, blackmail and attempts to exert pressure. But we have already developed immunity to this," Aliyev said.
The President did not name specific organizations that adopted resolutions critical of Azerbaijan, in which the country does not participate.
However, one of these structures is the European Parliament, which warned that it would not ratify the new agreement between Azerbaijan and the EU until the situation with human rights in the country improves. -06B--
