Modest visit of the Latvian President to Azerbaijan
On 22 June the President Ilham Aliyev met with the newly elected president of Latvia Raimonds Vejonis , sparingly reported the website of Azerbaijani President. The sides expressed readiness to develop bilateral relations. The official statement says nothing about the status and purpose of the visit. There is nothing about the visit and on the website of the Latvian president and the Latvian media.
The former defense minister Raimonds Vejonis was elected a president by the Seim of Latvia on June 3. On 1 July he will finish 1st half-year presidency of Latvia in the European Union and report on the activities of the Chair.
A significant event in this period was the Riga summit "Eastern Partnership." It was expected to sign an agreement "on strategic modernization" between the EU and Azerbaijan. However, Ilham Aliyev evaded participation in the summit, and sent there Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.
According to Western diplomatic sources, Mamedyarov took to Riga a document with unforeseen amendments. Despite the fact that they were adopted, Mammadyarov left the summit before the end, which caused disapproval of the EU.
Earlier, on June 12 the former president of Latvia, Valdis Zatlers, who established good personal relationships with President Aliyev visited Baku. Formally, he came to participate in the official opening ceremony of the first European Games. -0-
