Orthodox Christmas Celebrated in 30 Countries

Orthodox believers celebrate Christmas. Services are held in more than 30 countries.

On the night of January 7 Orthodox churches of Azerbaijan held celebrations on the occasion of Christmas. In the central Temple of Myrrhbearers the festive liturgy was performed by Bishop Alexander of Baku and the Caspian Sea, according to Turan.

Yesterday the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev congratulated the people of Azerbaijan and the entire Christian community of the country on the sacred holiday of Christmas.

"Christmas embodying update, harmony and well-being is every year solemnly and enthusiastically celebrated in our country by the Christian community. On this joyous day again I convey to you congratulations and wish your families happiness and prosperity," the message says.

In Russia, the center of the celebrations was the Christ the Savior Cathedral, which on the night of 6 to 7 January was attended by thousands of believers, according to RBC.

Orthodox Christmas is celebrated according to the Julian calendar – 13 days later than by Catholics. The night liturgy was performed by Patriarch Kirill, who congratulated the believers on the holiday.

"In celebration it is accepted to receive gifts. We ask God with faith that we get peace in families, nations and states. We hope for wisdom for rulers and blessings for all people, for consolation for the bereaved and inspiration for the prosperous. On the holiday it is accepted to give presents. Let us also bring a gift to the newborn Christ at least in one specific case, from which someone will be easier."

The Russian President Vladimir Putin celebrated the holiday in the Holy Virgin Temple at Voronezh together with students the church shelter. -0-
