PFPA Activist Imprisoned in Solitary Confinement
Contained in jail No 1 in Kurdakhani, a member of the Youth Committee of PFPA Elvin Abdullayev has been put in solitary confinement. Turan was told by the mother of the activist Zulfiya Abdullayeva.
According to her, the reason for the punishment was that he turned his back to the judges during the preparatory meeting in Baku Court of Grave Crimes on May 5.
"He turned his back in protest against the transformation of the judicial system of Azerbaijan into a power tool ansd against heavy sentences on innocent people," said his mother.
Despite the warning of the judges, the young man continued to stand back. Because of that, the preparatory meeting was postponed until May 14.
E. Abdullayev is a student of the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University. After criticism of the authorities among the students, he was summoned by Vice Rector and cautioned against it.
On January 8, 2015 after passing his exam, E.Abdulllayev was arrested and allegedly seized heroin in the amount of 3 grams.
E.Abdullayev is charged under Article 234.4.3 (drug trafficking on a large scale). However, the student said that the drugs were planted and considered the charges politically motivated.
According to his mother, her son has mental problems and at the preliminary investigation he was subjected to pressure.
"My son is sick. He was treated for a long time. During the interrogation in prison the investigators insulted him and the party leaders to provoke Elvin. He is often transferred to different cells and he is not given opposition newspapers," said Z. Abdullayeva.
On May 8 the detention center did not accept the food parcel she had brought for her son. "The food was not accepted. They said that he was in a solitary confinement cell since May 7 and he would be released on 15 May. The reason for this was not reported," said Z. Abdullayeva.
The activist’s lawyer Ali Mehdiyev does not know either for what reason the young man was put in solitary confinement. He learned about it from his mother and he tries to find out the reasons for the punishment.
The lawyer noted that the activist’s actions in the court cannot be a reason for his punishment in jail. -03B-
