Police Did Not Allow Islamists to Picket Embassy of France
A group of activists of the Islamic Party of Azerbaijan (IPA) and the faithful tried to hold a protest opposite the French Embassy today at around 11.00. They protested against the publication by the French weekly Charlie Hebdo of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.
However, reinforced police units did not allow the protesters to gather in front of the embassy. Police replaced dozens of protesters out of the park located near the embassy. The most active protesters were detained and taken to the police station. Among those detained was also the Deputy Chairman of IPA Akif Heydarli.
Meanwhile, veiled women gathered at the back of the square, chanting: "Long live Islam", "Death to the enemies of Islam" and "Damn Israel and USA!"
Another Islamist group tried to protest in the square Sahil, but was dispersed by the police. Ten people were detained.
Around 12.30 the Islamists tried to hold a protest in front of the US Embassy in token of protest against the anti-Islamic film Innocence of the Muslims filmed in the USA. -06C-
