Refusal to Release Mehman Aliyev on Bail to Be Appealed (updated) (UPDATED)
The lawyer Fuad Agayev considers the decision of the Yasamal District Court to reject the motion for the release of the Turan news agency's director Mehman Aliyev on bail unreasonable.
As Agayev told journalists after the court session, the petition was prepared in accordance with the procedure provided for by law.
"According to the law, release on bail may be chosen as a measure of restraint for persons accused of committing crimes that do not pose a serious public danger and less serious crimes.
We also stated in the petition that Mehman Aliyev had never been previously criminally responsible. He has a permanent place of residence, his place of work is known, and this is in Baku. He is in charge of three family members - a daughter, a spouse and a 90-year-old father. Unfortunately, the above was not taken into account and our petition was not granted," the lawyer said.
The defense will appeal this decision. If the Baku Court of Appeal does not satisfy the complaint, the case will be forwarded to the European Court of Human Rights.
According to the lawyer, Aliyev himself also supported the lawyer's request and drew attention to the fact that before the arrest he came to the investigation even on oral calls. On the day of his detention, he was summoned to the investigative body by telephone.
"When they called, they said there were several questions. Apparently they still receive answers to these few questions," the lawyer said. --0----

The court left Mehman Aliyev in custody (updated)
On September 6, 2017 the Yasamal District Court rejected the defense's request for the release of the director of the information agency Turan Mehman Aliyev on bail. The lawyer Fuad Aghayev stated, the decision of the court will be appealed in the court of appeal.
* Mehman Aliyev was detained on August 24. The next day he was charged under the Article 213.1 (tax evasion), 308.1 (misuse of official powers) and 192.2.2 (illegal business with the extraction of large income) of the Criminal Code. The court elected a preventive measure against him in the form of arrest until November 7. Aliyev rejected all accusations and called them politically motivated.
International organizations condemned Aliyev's arrest and called for his immediate release. The US State Department also called for the immediate release of Mehman Aliyev. Concern about the arrest of Aliyev was expressed by the French and British Foreign Ministries, urging the Azerbaijani authorities to comply with their international obligations in the field of human rights. 06B-
