Relatives of the journalist Guliyev are afraid of new charges against him
At a press conference on Tuesday on the protection of the rights of Araz Guliyev , the editor online-edition xeber44.com, who was arrested in September , it was stated that the investigation into his case is delayed deliberately. The press conference was held at the Institute for Reporters Freedom and Safety (İRFS); Azer Guliyev, the brother of the arrested, said that in accordance with the decision of the Masalli district court on 10 September, Guliyev was arrested for two months on a charge of disorderly conduct in the group (Article 221.2.1 of the Criminal Code) and resisting the power representatives (315.1 of the Criminal Code.)
After two months the term of investigation expired, however, the Serious Crimes Court has decided to extend his arrest, and the arrest of other three of his comrades in the jail of Kurdakhani. Guliyev’s brother considers it possible filing additional false accusations based on law enforcement agencies subsequently planted drugs and explosives. Such things had happened with journalists, and Araz is no exception, said b the brother of the arrested.
The journalist was arrested on September 8 during a protest of believers at the international folklore festival in Masalli, organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. A group of believers, according to speakers at the press conference, protested against the performance of half-naked dancers on stage.
According to the director of the IRFS, Emin Huseynov, in Azerbaijan delaying the investigation into the journalist case, is common. He cited the case of the founder and editor of "Khural" newspaper, Avaz Zeynalli, as the court has not passed a ruling yet, and the journalist is still in jail, and the activities of its editorial office is paralyzed.
According to observations, there are many cases of violations of freedom of expression and opinion, but not all of the potential "prisoners of conscience" and political prisoners, and their families turn to human rights activists, vainly hoping for leniency of authorities. --17D—
