State Department welcomes the release of Emin Huseynov
The US State Department’s spokesman John Kirby made a statement in connection with the case of human rights defender Emin Huseynov. "The United States welcomes the government's decision of the Azerbaijani government to allow Emin Huseynov safely leave the country," reads the statement. Head of the Institute for Reporters Freedom and Safety Emin Huseynov was hiding from arrest in the Swiss embassy in Baku since August last year.
" While we are pleased by this gesture, timed with the launch of the inaugural European Games in Baku, we urge the Azerbaijani government to extend this same good will to others considered to have been incarcerated for their civic activism-- including Leyla and Arif Yunus and Intigam Aliyev, whose health continues to deteriorate. We thank the Swiss government for its longstanding support and assistance to Huseynov," reads the statement. -02D-
