Summit of Eastern Partnership Opens in Vilnius
A summit of Eastern Partnership opened in Vilnius on 28 November. Six post-Soviet countries - Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine - will discuss and sign bilateral agreements with the European Union.
The forum is attended by representatives of 34 countries at the level of Heads of State and Ministers, as well as the EU leadership.
The main issue of the summit is still the question of Ukraine signing the Association Agreement and the free trade agreement with the EU.
Kiev's intention to refrain from signing the association agreement raises the question about the future of the entire project Eastern Partnership, which was launched in 2009.
Moldova plans to initial the Association Agreement with the EU as well as Georgia.
Azerbaijan plans to sign an agreement on simplification of visa regime with the EU, but it does not intend to sign the Agreement on associate membership.
Armenia was ready to initial an association agreement in Vilnius, but after pressure from the Kremlin, President Serzh Sargsyan reported his desire to join the Customs Union with Russia . -02D-
