The commissioner urged the ECHR protect lawyers in Azerbaijan
The Human Rights of the Council of Europe Commissioner Nils Muzhnieks, using his right of the "third party", sent a letter to the European Court of Human Rights, according to the secretariat of the European Commissioner message directed to Turan agency. The appeal related to the upcoming consideration of a complaint to the ECHR lawyer Khalid Bagirov against Azerbaijan in connection with the deprivation of his lawyer's office.
The reason for the persecution of the lawyer is active participation in the protection of human rights, and the immediate cause became a lawyer comments at the trial in Sheki Court of Appeal in September 2014 in the case of Ilgar Mamedov.
The commissioner based his appeal by the fact that Khalid Bagirov defended the rights of prominent human rights activists and public figures: Leyla and Arif Yunus, Rasul Jafarov and Hilal Mammadov. He was going to protect Khadija Ismailova too, but was stripped of his license.
The commissioner said that the human rights situation in Azerbaijan is of great concern.
The repression, judicial harassment against critical voices is widespread in Azerbaijan. The commissioner said that "Azerbaijan is not able to fulfill its international obligations in the field of protection of human rights," the statement says.
European Commissioner also noted the fact of ignoring by the official Baku the ECHR decisions, such as in the case of Ilgar Mamedov or confiscation of the documents of the lawyer Intigam Aliyev who prepared dozens of cases for submission to the ECHR or prosecution Alaif Hasanov.
Policy of removal of lawyers from the performance of their duties is a tool used by the authorities to stop their professional duties. Above all, this affects the lawyers working in the field of human rights and protection of the rights of prominent human rights defenders, noted in the appeal. -02D-
