A broad campaign of support can help «Azadlig» - Editor
The newspaper "Azadlig" has faced a great financialproblems through no its fault, and only campaign of public support can save the publication, said in an interview with Turan news agency and radio "Voice of America" the first deputy chief editor Rahim Hajiyev.
According to him, the difficult financial situation of the newspaper has further deteriorated after the second devaluation of the manat on 21 December. For example, newsprint increased by 50%, and printing costs by 25%. The newspaper has accumulated debts to the publishing house "Azerbaijan", whichlast month threatened to stop printing. Part of the debt was extinguished, but the problem remains.
The firm "Gasid" still refuses to repay many thousands debt to the newspaper. At the same time, the State Support Fund since the end of 2013 refuses to grant the "Azadlig" for political reasons.
How does it happen that the most readable newspaper of the country is in crisis, and publications with low circulation do not have such problems?
Answering this question Hajiyev said that in any normal democratic country the state does not press dates. Media Support Foundation of state simply distributes money to loyal media, which directly and indirectly work for the authorities. In fact, this Fund serbe for the elimination of the unwanted media, Hajiyev said.
What society can do to solve the problem of "Azadlig" newspaper? Deputy editor said that
Press Council some time ago, asked the government to cancel VAT on newsprint, but so far no results.
After the devaluation the steps were taken to restraint of price increases in a number of areas, but it does not affect the publishing. Apparently, the authorities are not interested in supporting a free press.
As for the public, it can support "Azadlig" by general subscription campaign, and save the newspaper from closing, said Hajiyev.—06С-
