Pandemic Strategy Was Initially Wrong - Azer Gasimli
Baku / 07.07.20 / Turan: Authoritarian regimes use the pandemic and the quarantine regime for their political purposes, political expert Azer Gasimli said in an interview with the Azerbaijani Voice of America service.
He named the referendum on constitutional amendments held in Russia perpetuating Putin’s power as one example of this.
Azerbaijani authorities are using the pandemic to violate human rights and prosecute their opponents, the expert continued. In support of his words, he pointed to the arrest of prominent opposition politician Tofig Yagublu and a number of opposition activists.
At the same time, he called the actions of the authorities to combat the pandemic ineffective. According to him, the government’s strategy was erroneous.
“First, strict quarantine was introduced, and then it was sharply mitigated, and now they are tightening it again. It seems that they have been experimenting with society for several months now.
The fact is that at the beginning of the pandemic, the daily increase in coronavirus infections was 30-40, and now it is not less than 500 people,” he said.
Gasimli questioned the reliability of official data on the number of infected and dead.
The expert also criticized the low size of benefits for job loss in the amount of 190 manat. Moreover, only one family member can receive this amount.
Gasimli considers it important to radically change the strategy of the government, the formation of a new composition of the Operational Headquarters and the inclusion in it of people of respect and trust in society, as well as skilled organizers.
“A strategy of measures should be developed, mass conducting tests in the capital and regions. Tests should be available and free for some people. People need opportunities to breathe fresh air, travel to the sea and to regions. But all this must be done thoughtfully and in a planned manner. For example, for traveling to areas, it is necessary to pass the test in advance.
Finally, the Operational Headquarters should prepare for a new wave of the epidemic, Gasimli believes. -16D06-
