Almost No Political Prisoners Among 423 Pardoned
On March 16 the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed an order to pardon 423 convicts. Of these, 412 are released from prison. For two people sentenced to life imprisonment, this punishment is replaced by terms of imprisonment. In particular, the former head of the Crime Search Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Zakir Mamedov previously sentenced to life imprisonment in the Haji Mammadov gang case has received 15 years' imprisonment.
Another convict has been exempted from deferred punishment. The rest have been exempted from punishment not related to deprivation of liberty.
The list of those pardoned includes the blogger Abdul Abilov, the activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan Elvin Abdullazadeh, relatives of the editor of the newspaper Azadlig Ganimat Zahid, Rufat and Rovshan Zahidov.
Nazim Agabekov, the brother-in-law of the head of Meydan TV, Emin Milli, has been released from the suspended sentence.
Among the pardoned 19 foreigners there are citizens of Iran, Pakistan, Russia, China, Nigeria, Turkey and Ukraine.
Thus, the hopes for the release of a large group of political prisoners, which on different lists are from 120 to 167, were not justified. -06D-
