Arrested PFPA Activist Placed in Mental Hospital
Baku / 13.10.17 / Turan: Fizuli Huseynov, an activist of the opposition Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), arrested on the eve of the opposition rally on October 7, was placed in a psychiatric hospital on Friday. Turan was informed about this by his lawyer Asabali Mustafayev.
According to him, on October 13 in the first half of the day the Baku Court of Appeal considered complaints of four arrested PFPA activists, including Huseynov. The lawyer did not notice anything strange in his behavior. However, due to the fact that Huseynov has been conducting a dry hunger strike since October 6, he looked weak and pale. Complaints of the activists were rejected and they were taken back to the detention center.
In the second half of the day Huseynov called his relatives and said he had been brought to a psychiatric hospital in the village of Mashtaga. The lawyer said he did not know on what grounds Huseynov was placed in a mental hospital. One of the reasons could be the intention of the police to absolve themselves of the responsibility for the consequences of the hunger strike on Huseynov's health and life.
"This morning they got a phone call to their home and were told that Fuzuli Huseynov was already getting a foam out of his mouth and that they should come and persuade him to start eating. Perhaps in the prison they decided to get rid of him. Or they decided that they could force him into a psychiatric hospital," the lawyer suggested.
The defender did not rule out the possibility that Huseynov wants to be permanently placed in a psychiatric hospital, since he, despite arrests, does not stop the action in defense of political prisoners. The activist was already holding solitary pickets, and in the detention center he began a hunger strike.
According to the lawyer, 53-year-old Huseynov is a normal adequate person, has a family, children, and a grandson.
According to Mustafayev, Huseynov was taken to a mental hospital on an ambulance. Within 48 hours he should be examined and only on the basis of the doctors' conclusion the court can decide on his compulsory treatment.
The lawyer informed the Ombudsman about the incident and intends to seek a meeting with Huseynov in the hospital on Saturday.
The leader of the Popular Front Party Ali Kerimli demanded the immediate release of Huseynov. He regarded Huseynov's placement in the hospital as a return to the practice of the USSR, when people were imprisoned for dissidence in psychiatric hospitals. -06B--
