Azerbaijan does not solve the problem of stateless persons
Problems of stateless persons were discussed at today's forum by the UN High Commissioner. The event, organized by the UN Office in Baku Hotel Park Inn, talking about modern resolution of the problems of this category of persons.
Representatives of the Baku office of Commissioner for Refugees, MPs, migration officials and NGOs held discussions around the problems of this category of persons in Azerbaijan.
According to the State Statistics Committee of Azerbaijan, now there are in Azerbaijan 4500 stateless, said a spokesman for Commissioner, Doug Sigurdson. His organization is ready to assist these people. These problems must be addressed systematically, because thousands of people remain without documents, he said.
Azerbaijani MP Chingiz Ganizade advocated the adoption of a convention on the fate of displaced persons. A representative of the Migration Service, Nazim Salmanov, said need to educate the public about the rights of migrants.
Expert Commissariat Alexander Novikau said that there are 3,400,000 stateless persons in the world. In Kyrgyzstan, there is a positive experience with the problems of these people, where 32,000 people from Uzbekistan got local citizenship.
"The complexity of Azerbaijan is that the people of this category do not receive any documents, so these people can not even go to court or other authority. Documents are not even issued to children born in Azerbaijan, as it requires documents parents," said the expert.
The Head of the Migration Aliovsat Aliyev said that the actual number of stateless persons in the camp more than 30,000, many of them are immigrants from Georgia, as well as members of families where one of the spouses is a representative of another country. In Azerbaijan there is a sound and long-term strategy to address the problem, he said. -03C-
