Azerbaijani Citizen Arrested in Georgia for Smuggling Gold
An Azerbaijani citizen Ramin Nabiyev was detained for secret import of gold on a large scale into Georgia outside the customs control, www.apsny.ge reported. The detention was made as a result of operational search and investigative actions conducted by the Investigation Service of Georgia's Finance Ministry in conjunction with the Customs Department of the Revenue Service.
The investigation established that while crossing the border, the accused tried to illegally carry smuggled gold bars and the highest standard jewelry on a large scale, the total amount of 55,000 lari ($ 24,700). This is more than half a kilo of gold.
The investigation is underway on the case under article 214 of the Criminal Code of Georgia that envisages a punishment sentence of 5 to 7 years.
Earlier, on April 20, the Georgian side detained 12 kg of gold at an attempt of smuggling from Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijani border guards do not usually notice smuggling of jewelry and drugs across the border. -0-
