Center for Protection of Political Prisoners Condemns New Wave of Repression
Baku / 25.10.18 / Turan: The Center for the Protection of Political Prisoners condemned the recent facts of arrests of public activists.
"Recently, a new wave of repression has begun against social activists and already convicted political prisoners. People are arrested on defamation charges for critical views. The arrested political prisoners are subjected to torture and attracted to new criminal cases," the Center said in a statement.
In particular, it indicates the arrests of an activist of the Musavat party Azad Hasanov, immediately after returning from Lithuania, where he was in political emigration, and also a member of the party of the Classic Popular Front, Jeyhun Nabi, who returned from the Russian Federation.
The latter was taken into custody in Shamkir on October 23, and for two days his relatives were not given information about his place of his detention. According to some reports, he was arrested for criticizing the authorities on Faceboook and held at the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
A minor activist Fatima Movlamly was detained for more than 30 hours in the Binagadi police, where she was forcibly taken evidence.
In recent days, political prisoners were subjected to unjustified arrests in a punishment cell: Ahsan Nuruzade, Elgiz Gahramanly, Afgan Mukhtarly, Saleh Rustamov, Agyl Maharramli, Ruslan Nasirli and Babek Hasanov.
Fuad Ahmedli, an activist of the Popular Front Party, and blogger Mehman Huseynov were denied parole.
Another activist of this party, Mamed Ibrahim and the believer Telman Shiraliyev, were arrested again after the prison sentence expired.
The Center for the Protection of Political Prisoners strongly condemns these facts of pressure on activists and journalists and demands their immediate release.
The Center calls on the Azerbaijani authorities to comply with the fundamental principles of the Constitution, to take effective measures to protect human rights and freedoms.
The Center for the Protection of Political Prisoners was established in January 2017 by the Institute for Peace and Democracy, the Public Alliance "Azerbaijan without Political Prisoners" and the Monitoring Center for Political Prisoners. -06D--
