Charges against Avaz Zeynalli must be Dropped
Preventive Response Journalist Group (PRJG), set up to investigate the criminal case against the editor of "Khural" newspaper, Avaz Zeynalli, requires charges of extortion be dropped, as stated by members of the group at a press conference in the media center of the Institute for Reporters Freedom and Safety (IRFS).
It was noted the complaint of the MP Gular Akhmedova played a main role in the arrest of Zeyunalli. However, the situation has changed, since Akhmedova herself has been accused of "trafficking".
The PRJG believes it is not right to blame the journalist for a person’s testimony, who herself is involved in a major fraud case. PRJG suggested stopping the criminal case on charges of accepting a bribe; instead return the case in for further investigation on the remaining items of "tax evasion" and "not fulfilling judgment".
The PRJG pointed out the state prosecutor’s pressure on witnesses, as soon as they started to tell the truth during the trial.-05C-
