Flag of Azerbaijan over the Pamirs
August 19, at about 15:00, Sirhan Mamedov, Firuz Dadashov and Rufat Gojayev reached the highest point of the former USSR - the top of the peak Ismail Somoni (formerly Communism Peak, 7,495 meters), and raised over it the flag of Azerbaijan.
All night before the storm there was a raging wind and snow was falling. Early departure had to be postponed and the boys were able to leave on a route only after the snow stopped. However, the wind did not die down and its strong gusts accompanied the climbers during the ascent, the President of Azerbaijan's Mountaineering Federation Israfil Ashurlu told Turan.
After the climbing the climbers descended to the camp at an altitude of 6,900 meters, where they will spend the night. Their condition is good. On August 20 they plan to descend to the base camp.
Note that on August 11, our team won the other Pamir seventhousander - Korjenevskaya Peak (7,105 m).
"We congratulate the climbers with these remarkable achievements. Their first ascent was devoted to the 100th anniversary of the outstanding Azerbaijani composer and conductor Niyazi, and the second one - to the 200th anniversary of the famous Azerbaijani writer Mirza Fatali Akhundov," said Ashurlu.
Even earlier - in late July, the Azerbaijani climbers made an ascent to another seventhousander - Ibn Sina (7,131 m). This ascent was dedicated to the founder of the Karabakh khanate and Shusha, Panah Khan. -02B-

Amid the bustling scenes of this year’s COP29 climate conference, a protest against whaling and deep-sea mining, organized by a group calling itself the FINS Initiative, drew significant attention from delegates and observers. However, questions have arisen about the legitimacy of the group, as an internet search yields little evidence of its existence beyond scattered mentions.

In the last two days, a "news" story appeared on TikTok about a whale spotted on Baku's seaside boulevard. The most "observant" users posted videos, commenting on the size of the animal. Later, other "witnesses" claimed it wasn't a whale, but a shark. Even later, a version emerged suggesting it was a submarine.
