Baku/03.12.22/Turan: Senior officials of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, Ministry of Emergency Situations and Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Neftchala region met with participants of the protest demonstration held the day before in Yenikend village (Lighthouse) of Neftchala region on November 2.

The meeting in Neftchala was reported to Turan by the press service of the Ministry of Ecology and Emil Mammadov (Salyan), the chairman of the Democracy Support Union.

Note that Turan reported on the protest action of fishermen in the article "In Mayak village of Neftchala region fishermen held a protest rally".

According to Mammadov, Ministry officials assured the Neftchala residents that the dam being built on one of the branches of the Kura River, at the river's confluence with the Caspian Sea, would not stop the spawning of marine fish into the river, and would not lead to a drop in fisheries.

"The meeting was held in the assembly hall of Yenikend village school.  Officials from the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources said that the dam was being built to prevent seawater from flowing into the Kura River. The locals agree that the Emergency Ministry is building a dam on the main part of the river (Ana Kur), at the same time they are against the construction of a dam on the small arm of the Kura River - (Bala Kur) . Residents said the closure of Bala Kur would lead to the cessation of fishing, the only trade for the residents," Mammadov said.

The representatives of the agencies promised that a free passage of five metres in the river will be left for the passage of small vessels in and out of the sea," he added.

According to Mammadov, the dam under construction will lead to stagnation of water in the Kura River and increase the number of mosquitoes, reducing the fish content in the Kura. "Fish will not rise above Neftchala. In Neftchala near the dam all the fish will be caught by local fishermen close to local authorities, while in Salyan and upstream there will be no fish," Mammadov told Turan.

The representatives of the agencies promised the residents to continue joint discussions in order to find solutions to their problems.

The height of the dams is set at 1m above the river surface," the foreman leading the work on the Kura River told Turan.-0-
