Nakhchivan Oppositionist Tortured
The activist of the Popular Front Party Zeinal Bagirzadeh convicted in Nakhchivan is subjected to inhuman torture. Turan was told by his brother, the head of the regional organization of PFPA Yashar Bagirsoy.
The day before he visited the convict, who said that ten days before he was brought half-naked to 20-degree frost and kept there until he lost consciousness, with his hands and feet tied. After that, he was thrown into a solitary cell not heated. This happened in the mixed type prison in the Kangarli region.
Bagirsoy did not rule out that the reason for the torture was his complaint with the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan of the unlawful arrest.
Bagirsoy expressed the hope that the relevant structures of Azerbaijan will intervene for health care measures and treatment of his brother.
Bagirsoy fears that after so many serious injuries, his brother could die.
Bagirzadeh was arrested on November 16, 2015 on charges of violence against representatives of the authorities and sentenced to 4 years imprisonment. This term was added a suspended sentence imposed in another case in 2012. Thus, the total sentence of punishment was 8 years. On February 21, the Supreme Court upheld the verdict.
Zeinal Bagirzadeh does not accept the charges, considering his arrest politically motivated. Employees of the State Social Protection Fund made a provocation against him a few days before his arrest. They came to his place, demanding payment to the Fund. Bagirzadeh himself was out at the time and an official called Faig Ismayilov spoke offensively against the host.
Bagirzadeh filed a complaint with the prosecutor's office against the employees of the Fund. However, his application was canceled, and the charge was brought against the very Bagirzadeh, whom Babek District Court convicted on 2 February 2016. The NAR Supreme Court subsequently upheld that decision, and dismissed Bagirzadeh’s appeal. -06B--

November 8 is celebrated as Victory Day in Azerbaijan. In 2020, Azerbaijan restored its territorial integrity through a 44-day war and a one-day military operation in 2023. Although a ceasefire declaration was signed between the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Russia, a peace treaty between Baku and Yerevan has yet to be signed, even four years later.
