Oppositionist Complains about Police Pressure
Baku/10.02.21/Turan: The chairman of the Lankaran regional organization of the Popular Front Party (PFPA) Nazim Hasanov was taken to the local police department the day before. He was taken to the city administration, accompanied by police officers at about 17.00, and three hours later, returned home.
“I didn't know why they were taking me to the police. I was brought to the deputy chief Elmar Mehdiyev. He spoke to me dismissively, accused me of publishing against the state and intending to overthrow the government. I said that we are in opposition to the government, not the state. If he wrote something illegal, he is ready to answer for it.
However, the deputy chief of police threatened me with arrest for 5-10 days and “advised” me to “be smart” and said that “this is the last warning”. I said that we will not retreat from our political struggle,” Hasanov told Turan.
After that, a similar conversation with Hasanov was conducted by the assistant to the chief of police, after which he was released. The oppositionist assessed the actions of the police as pressure on him in connection with his political activities.
In turn, the head of the Interior Ministry's media and public relations department Elshad Hajiyev called Hasanov's allegations "unfounded and untrue."
“A preventive conversation was held with Nazim Hasanov, after which he was released. There is no investigation into him,” Hajiyev said. -0-

Historian Jamil Hasanli's recent Facebook post has reignited debates over Azerbaijan's pension system and labor market, exposing significant shortcomings in social welfare and employment policies. The sharp critique followed Minister of Labor and Social Protection Sahil Babayev's parliamentary statement that individuals who have never worked or contributed to social insurance should not be eligible for pensions. The statement has drawn attention to entrenched structural issues in Azerbaijan's labor and pension frameworks, where employment gaps and limited social safety nets exacerbate inequality.
