Baku/02.03.21/Turan: March 2 marks the 16th anniversary of the murder of the editor-in-chief of the Monitor magazine Elmar Huseynov.

He was killed by seven pistol shots on the stairs of his house. The Turkish investigators involved in the investigation stated that they had solved the crime that was committed by a criminal group in the person of law enforcement officials. However, the authorities said the murder was committed by ethnic Azerbaijanis from Georgia Tahir Khubanov and Teymuraz Aliyev.

The investigation claims that these persons have been put on the wanted list through Interpol, but the Georgian authorities have denied this. In fact, the case was let down on the brakes, and no one was looking for these persons.

There is a version of involvement in the murder of the criminal group headed at that time by Interior Ministry Colonel Haji Mammadov, who was arrested and sentenced to life for numerous murders and abductions, and who later died in prison.

The Monitor magazine took an acute critical position in relation to the authorities, revealing the problems of clannishness, corruption, ineffective governance, and violation of human rights and freedoms. Elmar Huseynov received threats from the highest echelons of power and demands to stop criticism.

The Turan news agency laid flowers at the tombstone of Elmar Huseynov today, paying tribute to his courage and dedication to his cause.

On the initiative of the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS), a virtual conference “Justice to Elmar” will be held today from 19.30 to 21.00, dedicated to the next anniversary of the murder of Elmar Huseynov. The conference will be streamed live on YouTube and Facebook. —0—
