SMMM welcomes the statement by Amnesty International Nardaran case
On 10 February a Center for Protection of Political Prisoners (SMMM) discussed the current situation in the country. The meeting on Skype was attended by responsible for International Relations Center Leyla Yunus. According to her, last week the international community was informed about the situation with political prisoners in Azerbaijan, in particular, in the case of Nardaran. "Attempts by the authorities to introduce Nardaran case as a struggle against religious extremism have failed, and Europe strengthened the view that those arrested and convicted in this case being persecuted for freedom of expression," said Yunus. The report, prepared by the working group on political prisoners (list 160), referred to various international organizations, governments, the deputies. The meeting participants discussed further steps and measures for the protection of political prisoners. Support was expressed for the position of the organization Amnesty International, and in particular its call to the Government of Azerbaijan to investigate the violations of the right to a fair trial and the facts of torture of Thale Bagirzade, and another 17 people on the Nardaran case.
