Azerbaijan's Deputy Minister of Science and Education, Idris Isaev, has proposed granting students studying in secondary specialized educational institutions the right to a deferral from military service.

However, this would not be a full postponement, as students who have not completed their curriculum are still required to serve for a period of time.

The proposal has not yet received a response from the State Service for Mobilization and Conscription, but Jeyhun Mammadov, a member of the Milli Majlis Committee on Science and Education told Turan that granting such a respite is normal and could have a positive impact on the education process.

There are 54 secondary specialized educational institutions in Azerbaijan, with up to 50,000 students enrolled.

Education expert Kamran Asadov believes that the right to delay military service could increase interest in colleges, particularly among boys who were previously deterred by the lack of this option. Asadov also told Radio Azadlig  that Azerbaijan's strong army would not be negatively affected by the proposed deferral.--0--
