The alternative to cooperation is war and the end of Armenia

In recent days, tension between Azerbaijan and Armenia has increased. The positions of the Azerbaijani army are daily bombarded both from the territory of Armenia and from the side of the Armenian armed formations in Karabakh.

Speaking on July 14 at the ceremony of presenting apartments and cars to families of martyrs and war invalids in the village of Khojasan, President Ilham Aliyev said that Armenia is not ready to sign a peace agreement. “I have said several times that we are ready to sign a peace treaty with Armenia. That is, we are ready to start this work. However, there is no reaction from Armenia, no official reaction to this. Through unofficial channels, we receive information that Armenia is not ready for this,. This could be another big mistake, just like in case  when the Armenian side committed war crimes on the eve and during the war."

On July 15, at a government session, Nikol Pashinyan said that Armenia is ready for a peace agreement with Azerbaijan. “But there is only one way. First of all, the final status of Nagorno-Karabakh must be determined. Without this, a peace agreement is simply impossible."  He noted that, despite peace-loving statements in the international arena, Azerbaijan will do everything to prevent peace in the region.

Why can't Armenia and Azerbaijan come to an agreement? How can the ongoing processes end?

Member of the parliamentary committee on international relations and inter-parliamentary relations Elman Nasirov told Turan that the recent violations of the ceasefire by the Armenian armed forces in various directions show that the Armenian side is purposefully aggravating the situation. "They intend to disrupt the initiative to sign a peace agreement with Azerbaijan."

He noted that in the past, when there was progress in the negotiation process, the Armenian side immediately resorted to military provocations in order to neutralize the results of the negotiations. “Now the negotiations on the peace agreement are actualized, the issues related to the opening of the Zangezur corridor are on the agenda. In addition, the issue of delimitation and demarcation of borders is becoming the subject of international discussions. Against the background of all these realities, new historical conditions are emerging in the region ”.

The member of the commission believes that these conditions are extremely beneficial for Armenia as well. “The opening  communications is a salvation for the crumbling economy of Armenia, but the Armenian side does not agree to this. "

According to the deputy, the reason for this is the revanchist forces of Armenia. “Even today they are looking for a pretext to trigger a wave of protests against Pashinyan, and they want to derive the maximum benefit from this. Pashinyan became a hostage of this situation. Today he perfectly understands that there is no alternative to cooperation. The alternative is war and the end of Armenia. He also knows that in the elections the Armenian people voted not for him, but for peace."

Nasirov noted that today the signing the peace agreement by Nikol Pashinyan could cause an explosion. "For this reason that he is so cautious and often turns a blind eye to such provocations, accusing Azerbaijan of aggressive actions."

According to him, it is a matter of time, and after a while everything will fall into place. “Once Armenia refused to negotiate. The result was a shameful defeat. And now, such steps can lead to the fact that Armenia will face big problems ”.

Security expert Ilham Ismayil told that shootings on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border and on the contact line in Karabakh have intensified. “This is not in our favor. We want the signing of a peace agreement and that this issue be resolved within the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, so that our citizens of Armenian origin can stay in their places of residence. However, the opposite side does not agree with this. They do not want Karabakh without status”.

The expert believes that Armenia is provoked by global forces. “These are Russia, France and the United States. In fact, by refusing to visit Shusha, they want to prove that the Minsk Group co-chairs are on the side of Armenia. Moreover, Russia wants to stay in Karabakh for a long time as peacekeepers."

He noted that delaying the process is beneficial for Armenia. “That is why they commit provocations. The Armenian side expects to achieve concessions from Azerbaijan, increasing international pressure through the Armenian diaspora. But this requires a foundation. These are the inspiring messages from the co-chairs. ”

According to Ismail, there is a way out of this situation. “The way out is for Azerbaijan to demand that the Russian state fulfill the November 10 statement. If the provisions of this statement are fulfilled, it will mean that half the battle in achieving peace has already been done." -0-
