There will be an increase in admission to higher schools by 10 thousand, but what about jobs?

The number of admissions to higher education institutions in Azerbaijan is set to increase by 10,000. However, concerns arise regarding job availability for graduates.

On May 20, Azerbaijan will commence its entrance exams for higher education institutions. In 2022, the admission plan for Bachelor's degree programs in higher educational institutions amounted to 51,881, out of which 23,627 were state-funded positions.

This year, it is anticipated that the number of admission places for Bachelor's degree programs in higher education institutions will reach approximately 60,000. The State Examination Center has stated that by 2024, the target is to increase the planned admission places to 63,000 for universities.

Nonetheless, many young individuals who have completed their university education continue to express difficulties in finding employment in their respective fields. When approached by Turan,  the Ministry of Science and Education indicated that admission to higher education institutions based on state orders is determined through an analysis of the country's socio-economic prospects and labor market. The ministry emphasized that this analysis is prepared and submitted by the Ministry of Economy, but discussions with the Ministry of Economy on this matter have not yet taken place.

Education expert Nabat ali Gulamov stressed to Radio Azadlig that currently there is no organization in Azerbaijan that would carefully assess the needs of the labor market. Gulamov stated, "In terms of unemployment, there are specific sectors, such as the economy and technical fields, where competent personnel are always in demand."

According to the expert, the yearly increase in planned admission places and state-funded positions in universities serves as mere external decoration, giving the illusion of progress. Gulamov emphasized the need to prioritize the improvement of education quality and suggested that education should be made freely available to enhance its standards. He argued that leaving education free implies the necessity to strengthen competition in the educational system.

Gulamov further asserted that competition is an integral part of education, questioning the significance of creating millions of planned admission places when the workforce is being prepared for low-skilled jobs at local markets.
