Today Azerbaijan marks State Independence Day
On October 18 Azerbaijan celebrates State Independence Day. On October 18, 1991 the Azerbaijani government adopted the Constitution Act on restoration of Azerbaijan's state independence.
By this document Azerbaijan Republic was proclaimed as successor of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic of 1918-1920, which collapsed as a result of Azerbaijan's occupation by bolshevist Russia.
According to the Constitution Act, all citizens have equal rights, irregardless of their nationality and religion. Through 2006 October 18 was a nonworking day. But last year the parliament amended legislation and excluded October 18 from the list nonworking holidays. Though October 18 is celebrated as State Independence Day, no state events are held on occasion of this date.-06D-
