Ukrainian Union of Journalists defends Rauf Mirkadirov
Baku.29.04.14.Turan : The Union of Journalists of Ukraine and the Independent Media Trade Union issued a statement in which they said:
"On 20 April the authorities of Azerbaijan detained and arrested a prominent journalist, political columnist for Zerkalo, Rauf Mirkadirov. He was charged with treason (espionage in favor of Armenia).
We cannot know all the details of the charges, but it is known that for many years Mirkadirov made comprehensive coverage of the Karabakh conflict and was a sure supporter of the territorial integrity of his country. He never concealed his views, sometimes opposition. His journalistic work has always been on the mind.
Rauf Mirkadirov is known for his sharp publications on domestic and international issues, including the situation in Ukraine. His articles for the Azerbaijani readers about events in Ukraine were objective, informative and independent source of information. He is well versed in the political situation, writes a lot, and his opinion is read and respected.
Freedom of speech and freedom of expression are an integral part of a modern democratic state.
Ukrainian journalists are concerned about the arrest of their colleague. We hope for a fair consideration of the charges against him and call to release Rauf Mirkadirov, give him the opportunity to continue to engage in journalistic work," the statement says. -02D-

In the last two days, a "news" story appeared on TikTok about a whale spotted on Baku's seaside boulevard. The most "observant" users posted videos, commenting on the size of the animal. Later, other "witnesses" claimed it wasn't a whale, but a shark. Even later, a version emerged suggesting it was a submarine.
