Abdulla Gul Can Take Advantage of Erdogan"s Stubbornness
Turkey's Prime Minister did not cancel his tour to North African countries. Recep Tayyip Erdogan has arrived in Morocco and does not plan to return to his country until Thursday. Currently, Turkey is experiencing an unprecedented wave of protests. The Prime Minister hopes that everything will be resolved by his return, reports Euronews.
According to local and foreign observers, Erdogan is arrogant, and by showing his intransigence, he may lose control of the situation.
In his opinion, demonstrators are marginal and even extremists, and should be subject to stringent repression. Against this background, makes Abdullah Gul position of President much more advantageous.
"If there is dissatisfaction, criticism, it is because of the election, and it is true that people are expressing their indignation through peaceful protests," says the president. Some observers believe that Gul can use the "Turkish Spring" to his advantage.
Both the President and the Prime Minister were at the origin of the Justice and Development party, a dissident wing of the banned Islamist party in Turkey.
The Party of Justice caused a shock by winning the 2002 elections, as a result, provided her an absolute majority in parliament and the opportunity to form a government.
Then, the law did not allow Erdogan, the leader of the party, to take the post of prime minister. He had to give way to Gul. However, a year later, amendments were made to the Constitution, and Erdogan became prime minister, and re-elected twice.
As for Gul, he became a Foreign Minister, and in 2007, he was elected president. He does not have the power as head of the government, but has the support of the influential Muslim movement "Hizmet".
Gradually the two politicians grew apart, and in 2011, their relationship deteriorated. The reason is that Erdogan made it impossible to participate as a candidate of Gul’s entourage in the recent parliamentary elections. The president did not hide his discontent with the prime minister. Now, he can take advantage of the situation, says Euronews. -02D-
