Arrest Warrants Issued for 47 Journalists of Zaman in Turkey
As part of the investigation into the attempted coup in Turkey, authorities issued a warrant for the arrest of 47 journalists who previously worked in the Zaman newspaper of the opposition.
In addition to former senior employees of the paper, subject to arrest are some of its observers.
Early this morning, the police appeared in the house of the journalist Shahin Alpay in Istanbul and after a two-hour search detained him.
The Zaman newspaper was formerly owned by the Hizmet movement led by the Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen. Turkish authorities accuse Gulen living in the United States of the organization of the coup attempt.
In March, authorities actually captured the Zaman newspaper and since then it has become a pro-government publication.
On July 25, warrants were issued in Turkey for the arrest of 42 journalists, including the well-known commentator and former MP Nazli Ilichak. She was arrested on 26 July.
In general, since the suppression of the coup attempt in Turkey more than 60,000 people have been detained, removed from office or put under investigation, including soldiers, police, judges, teachers, and civil servants. -02D-
