Strasbourg / 05.12.17 / Turan: Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muizhnieks on December 5 published a report on Reproductive Health and Women's Rights in Europe.

The document notes that part of the female population of Europe is deprived of its fundamental rights as a result of the policies of their governments.

The Commissioner encourages these countries to implement the recommendations made in this study and to remove obstacles to gender equality as soon as possible.

The report by Muizhnieks contains 54 recommendations. In particular, it proposes providing women with modern contraceptive methods, creating a system that provides cheap access to safe abortions.

Among the countries that have a low rating on the use of modern contraceptives, Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Bosnia and Herzegovina are indicated.

The report also talks about successes in combating maternal mortality. In the years 2000-2015 the maternal mortality rate dropped sharply from 33 to 16 per 100,000 births. However, in several European countries the maternal mortality rate remains high and exceeds the index for other places in the region by 25 times.

Among the countries with a high level of maternal mortality there are Azerbaijan, Albania, Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine and the Russian Federation.

According to representatives of the Ministry of Health, 17 cases of maternal death were registered in Azerbaijan in January-September of this year. Twenty-four cases of maternal mortality were registered in 2015, and there were 22 cases in 2016. -16D06-
