Democracy Is Never Guaranteed, Biden Warns, As America Celebrates Independence Day
Washington D.C./05.07.23/Turan: U.S. President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden on Tuesday celebrated America's Independence Day, warning that democracy must be protected across generations as "it is never guaranteed," as the president put it, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports from the White House.
The first couple hosted approximately 7,500 guests for the Fourth of July celebration. In his remarks before military families, Biden said, "Throughout our history, you remind us that democracy is never, never, never guaranteed. Every generation must fight to maintain it. We must always cherish it, defend it, and strengthen it."
Biden affirmed that all people have "unalienable rights" — among them life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness — and affirmed that the United States should not deviate from these principles.
Furthermore, he emphasized that during its 247-year history, the country has made enormous progress as a nation, "and that’s due to the people of this nation -- the people of this nation -- not the politicians"
"We just have to keep going... And we just have to remember who we are." Biden, 80, will seek re-election in next year's presidential elections.
The first couple later watched fireworks from the White House balcony, while thousands of military and veteran family members and administration employees and senior White House staff and families enjoyed the show from blankets and picnic tables on the White House lawn.
Drinks, popcorn and beer were served. A large stage was set up for musical acts.

During the winter session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) that opened today in Strasbourg, the issue of restoring Azerbaijan's voting rights will not be considered. This became clear after the Azerbaijani parliament did not submit a request to PACE for the reinstatement of its delegation's powers. Recall that Azerbaijan was deprived of its voting rights in PACE in January of the previous year.
