Erdogan Announced Sending of Turkish Military to Libya
Baku / 06.01.20 / Turan: Turkish President Erdogan announced on Sunday the start of the dispatch of Turkish troops to Libya. "Our military is tasked with coordinating with the Libyan army. Turkish troops are heading to Libya for the security of the legitimate government," Erdogan told CNN Turk.
He also said that 2.5 thousand Russian mercenaries from the Wagner group and 6 thousand mercenaries from Sudan are in Libya. "Why can't we go there when a legitimate government asks us to do so?" added Erdogan.
Last week, Ankara approved a bill providing for the possibility of sending troops to Libya. According to some reports, at the first stage, military advisers will arrive in Libya to train fighters of the Government of National Accord (GNA). Further, Ankara will begin deliveries of weapons.
There is a dual power in Libya: the internationally recognized GNA headed by Faiz Saraj in Tripoli and the army of Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, who has been attacking government forces in the capital since mid-December. Haftar is supported by Russia and a number of other countries. -02D-
