The ruling party prepares for the referendum
Immediately after today's decision of the Constitutional Court, which supported the draft Referendum Act on amendments and additions to the Constitution, the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) has started the preparation to the referendum.
This issue was discussed at today's all-republican meeting of the party. According to the press service of YAP, the meeting was attended by the heads of district and city locations.
YAP believes that the amendments are aimed at strengthening human rights and freedoms.
The referendum on changes to the constitution must take place within 60 days after it was announced by the president.
The amendments to the Constitution provide for greater strengthening presidential power in Azerbaijan, gives the head of state the right to dissolve parliament, appoint the first vice-president and vice-presidents; and provides for the increase of presidential term from 5 to 7 years, and president has the right to appoint early presidential elections.-0-
