Turkey Condemns Illegitimate "Elections" in Karabakh, Calls for International Non-Recognition

Kyiv/09.09.23/Turan: The Turkish Foreign Ministry has issued a forceful condemnation of what it terms "elections" orchestrated by Armenian forces within the contested Karabakh region of Azerbaijan. Characterizing these events as a blatant violation of established international norms, including United Nations Security Council resolutions and Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) principles, the Turkish Foreign Ministry left no room for ambiguity in its statement.

The ministry underscored that these so-called "elections" represent yet another attempt to unilaterally legitimize the present situation in the region, directly contravening accepted international legal standards. This move is particularly disconcerting as it transpires amidst ongoing efforts to facilitate peace talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia, an act perceived by Turkey as an endeavor aimed at undermining these painstaking negotiations. "We condemn this," the Turkish Foreign Ministry asserted unequivocally.

Turkey, in no uncertain terms, declared its refusal to recognize the illegitimate "elections," denouncing them as a grave affront to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. In a call to action directed at the United Nations and the international community, the ministry implored them not to endorse or recognize these contested proceedings. Turkey's commitment to fostering a peaceful resolution to the Karabakh conflict remains unwavering, and the nation maintains its confidence that the expeditious signing of a comprehensive peace agreement will play an instrumental role in fostering enduring peace and stability within the region.

"Turkey supports the process of peace negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia and remains confident that the early signing of a permanent peace agreement will make a great contribution to peace and stability in the region," the Foreign Ministry added.--0--
