U.S. To to Help Ukraine Prepare for Winter
Last week in Ukraine, USAID Administrator Samantha Power announced a $55 million investment in Ukraine’s heating infrastructure to aid the country’s preparations for winter amid Russia’s brutal war.
This new assistance "will help support repairs and keep the heat on through the winter," State Department's Principal Deputy Spokesperson told reporters. "It will directly help up to 7 million Ukrainianas," he said.
The assistance will particularly target parts of Ukraine that have been devastated by Putin’s war, including the regions of Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Zaporizhzhya, and Zhytomyr, according to the USAID press statement.
USAID will also provide power generators and alternative fuel sources to hospitals, centers for internally-displaced persons, and shelters for socially vulnerable citizens, helping provide the people of Ukraine with access to warm shelter during winter.
During her visit to Ukraine, Samantha Power met with President Zelenskyy, where she "reaffirmed the U.S. Government’s unwavering commitment to help Ukraine prevail in the war and reiterated that the U.S. will never recognize Russia’s purported annexations of Ukrainian territory," Patel said.
"The administrator also had an opportunity to meet with farmers in Ukraine to hear firsthand about how the conflict has affected their livelihoods. Additionally, she met with the mayor of Kyiv and visited a neighborhood and school which was previously used as a makeshift bomb shelter," he added.
